about

Spending well over a year tucked away in their own home studio, the Ex-Hustlers' hard work has paid off on Barnheart. Stepping outside the conventional guitar-bass-drums format to create a full, lush pop record, the Northwest band has brought their sound to a new level. Marrying classic orchestral pop sounds of the sixties to modern mid-fi aesthetics.

Track Name: Introduction
No, I never claimed to be
the smartest man in the world.
Well, that's not true
but I never said that in front of you.

Am I moving on?
(Rest in my barnheart tonight)
Yes, I'm moving on

If you came from where I'm from
you'd have your problems, too.
It brings you down
Come on, let me show you around.
Track Name: Nice Rice
When you marry that guy,
I hope you get rice in your eye.
Of course, I won't attend,
but I'll hear all about it from my friends.

(chorus)
How he choked as you shoved
the wedding cake into his face.
That's not hope, that's just faith.
I live in a small place.
And it's better in here than out there.

And they'll all gather 'round
as you fall to the ground,
tripped up on your wedding gown.
Of course, I won't attend,
but I'll hear all about it from my friends.

(chorus)
Track Name: Kelly Says
Kelly goes to pick her mail
from a post office box.
Kelly knows that I don't
hold her work against her,
at least I think so.

Kelly paints, when she's not at work
and I'll bet she writes poetry.
Kelly fakes it for the others,
but she means it for me,
at least I think so.

Something in that smile says,
"It's useless to pretend it'd be
anything less than vile to
show me to your friends."
But is it in denial or is it in defense?
She still seems like an angel
with Vaseline on the lens.

Kelly lays upon the bed
as a crew lights the set.
Kelly prays it's over soon
so she can start to forget,
at least she tries to.

Kelly says,
"Hey, it pays the rent."
Track Name: The Ballad of Anne Pilgrim
I loved you, but you had to go.
And now I'm feeling so low.
Anne Pilgrim, why'd you have to go?
They called you 'Janet Munro' and
you knew the Little People, oh
Anne Pilgrim, you spoke to them
I remember 'The Day That the Earth Caught Fire.'
'The Horsemasters' that we'd inspired
'The Third Man on the Mountain'
I wanted to see you again, Anne.
Track Name: Summer Stars
Well, we tried all night
to get high, high as kites.
Summer stars were bright.
You said, "Everything's alright."
The dogs were loose and free.
I loved you, you loved me,
for one night.

Then we talked all night
and made plans to take flight.
Feelings we don't have to fight,
well, we were both a little tight.
A breeze ran through the trees.
I loved you, you loved me,
for one night.

The next day, you seemed so far away
all the feeling was removed,
to let me know I was confused.
But I can still see the moonlight
dappling the ground here and there
and all the burrs stuck in your hair.

You got away scot-free...
and I got poison ivy
from that night.
Track Name: Ship Song
You sleep so hard,
you crease your face
in the night.
Your body doesn't move
under the weight of the moonlight.

(chorus)
You wake to find your ship's come in,
but instead of docking at the port, it keeps sailing.
It's sailing on.
(It's sailing on, you never saw this coming on)

Outside, the crickets roar,
the waves beat on the shore,
inside you dream of more.
You miss the maidenhead
and now you bleed in your bed,
gored by a broken oar.

(chorus)

Now the day throws the fight
and lays down to the night.
All hope is lost
until dawn.
Track Name: Let the Masters Work
These times seem so perfect,
I don't know what to say.
I guess that's why
He made them this way.
With you lying there,
there's a mystic air
(yeah, there's a charge in the air).
It's like we're being painted by someone.
There's the snapshot they took
as they write the perfect book.

Let the Masters I work,
I'll smile 'til it hurts.

Part of me wants to say,
"Put your pens and your brushes away."
Because this moment in time
can't be captured by rhyme or line.

Oh, they're in love with the light,
the darks contrasting the whites
(yeah, it's like day vs. night)
This scene should be the subject of sculpture.
Set us in bas-relief, with you so close to me.

Let the Masters I work,
I'll smile 'til it hurts.

These times seem so perfect,
I don't know what to say -
(except 'doo-duh-doo-doo').
Track Name: Dance Song
Maybe I could blame it on the champagne.
It makes me do these things
I can't explain.
Maybe I was caught up in the wedding vibe.
No one could ever say I never tried.

(chorus)
I guess I just wanted to see you dance.
I slept with my Casio to get to your stereo.
I slept with my Casio just to get into your stereo.
I guess I just wanted to see you dance.

It was after midnight when you appeared.
We'd been toasting all night and
I felt kind of weird.
Your face was so bright, your hair was long.
Right when I saw you I knew
I had to write a dance song.

(chorus)

Maybe I could blame it on the champagne or the way you shake your frame
Track Name: Bore
I've become such a bore
that I'm not interested in me anymore
because I don't have much to say.
No clever insight or witty observations.
Is it just dimwittedness or a lack of inspiration?

(chorus)
When the night finds you alone
clutching onto your cordless phone
and the salesman he seems like a friend,
that's a clue you're near the end.
And it's sick, so sick.

So, now I'm a bore
and you're not interested in me anymore
because I don't have much to say.
No clever insight or witty observations.
Is it just dimwittedness or a lack of inspiration?

(chorus)
Track Name: Except Cry
I tried to leave,
between God and you
something wouldn't let me say goodbye.
And now my sheets smell like you
and there's nothing I can do
except cry.

You're going to move
right into my life
and it seems so bittersweet to me.
Now I'm a ruiner, too,
'cause there's nothing I can do
except cry.
